Pet First Aid+CPR Course  


Developed for Pet Groomers, other Pet Professionals and Conscientious Pet Owners

1. First Aid Skills:

○ CPR for Dogs and Cats: Learn how to perform (CPR) cardiopulmonary resuscitation on pets. This includes chest compressions and rescue breathing.
Choking, including how to perform abdominal thrusts if appropriate.
○ Wound Management: Proper methods for cleaning, treating, and bandaging cuts, abrasions, and other minor injuries.
○ Burns and Hot Spots: How to treat burns from hot grooming tools and manage skin irritations or hot spots.
○ Emergency Triage to determine a life threatening medical emergency.


2. Handling Common Grooming-Related Issues:

○ Scissor or Clipper Injuries: Immediate care for injuries caused by grooming tools.
○ Allergic Reactions: Recognizing and managing allergic reactions, which might occur due to grooming products or environmental factors.

3. Emergency Response:

○ Heatstroke: Signs of heatstroke, especially important if working in a hot environment, and how to cool down an overheated dog.
○ Seizures: Steps to take if a dog has a seizure, including how to keep the dog safe during the episode.

4. Behavioral Management:

○ Handling Injured or Anxious Dogs: Techniques to safely restrain and calm a dog that is in pain or frightened, minimizing further injury.

5. Emergency Preparedness:

○ Evacuation Routes: Identify and practice evacuation routes in case of fire, natural disasters, or other emergencies. Ensure these routes are clear and accessible.
○ Safe Spaces: Determine safe locations for pets and staff during emergencies, and ensure these spaces are equipped with necessary supplies.

6. Disaster Preparedness:

○ Natural Disasters: Plan for common local disasters, such as hurricanes, floods, or earthquakes. This includes having a disaster plan for evacuating pets and securing the facility.
○ Backup Power: Consider having backup power sources (like a generator) if your facility is in an area prone to power outages.

7. Routine Drills and Training:

○ Practice Drills: Regularly conduct drills for emergencies such as fires or natural disasters. Ensure all staff are familiar with the procedures.
○ First Aid+CPR Training: Regularly update your pet first aid skills and keep abreast of new techniques or changes in protocols.
